New online PR group in India - PR for Youth - Share and learn from PR experiences
View Comments Published by on 5/20/07 at 15:30.

The PR industry in India predominantly consists of young people - freshers from PG mass communications institutes or PR professionals with some years of experience. These are the ones who are out in the field doing the media rounds everyday, those who are responsible for running PR campaigns of big and small clients alike, getting press conferences done, and those who get the much desired media clips. They are the ones who run the show most of the times once any client comes into any PR agencies' kitty. However, their voices get buried deep among the sophisticated PR philosophies of the veterans. PR associations talk a grand language that many of these young people often do not understand.
Is there a disconnect with the young PR people and PR associations? I am not sure but I feel that young people in the industry are more interested in knowing and learning what it takes to get more clips for their clients, how to improve their media network, how to grow their career path in the industry, how to write a better press release, how to give a ppt. presentation to the client, how to make a PR plan, which agencies are paying the best, etc. - things that are more immediate than rather say a discussion on the challenges and possibilities of PR in the new world economics.
Recently there was a discussion in the online PRPoint group on the state of the PR associations in India and people realise that there was a need to form a group consisting of young people.
This discussion has taken shape in the PR for Youth group that is now live and running.
The group has been started with the guidance of K. Srinivasan of the popular Yahoo groups on marketing and PR and being moderated by Tushar, a Mumbai-based young PR professional . Since its inception a few weeks back, the group already has 32 young PR people as its members on board.
I think this could become a good platform to share thoughts on our PR practices, share tools and information, etc. We can learn a lot from each other's experiences and seek help on issues we are facing. Maybe we can work together on creating some media lists and publication profiles that any group member can use.
The group is seeking opinions from everyone in how to take the discussions forward and what activities can be plan in the coming weeks. So looking forward to discussing with you in the group..

On this Independence day of the world's largest democracy, people are talking about one nation, one society, (it is another thing that a good friend of mine pointed out that how ironical is it on the day we got our freedom, we are all so bound and terrorised that nobody dares step out...and she was right.)......let's talk about the PR community ...online ones for now.
We know there are many communities on various subjects on the web. Joining one of them could be fun - you get to meet people like you, discuss ideas, seek help on a project, post a vacancy, tell people you are looking for a change, or just read what others are saying. This is a list of the popular online communities on public relations. Check them out.

Surprised to find no group on PR here. Who's starting one?
My opinion: All of them have their merits. The Yahoo groups primararily have discussions on PR tools and practices, new developments in the business community, etc., and have young and experienced professionals as members, though most of them maintain a formal tone. The Orkut communities are like informal groups of friends - vibrant with mostly young crowd coming up with cool ideas like PR people meeting up at popular restaurants in different cities. The Ryze community is a bit of both. You will find most people from Orkut here as well, but for the time being, people just seem to be enjoying introducing themselves :-)
Well, there are many more communities, I'm sure.

I got a comment on my last post at Indianpad offering me another alternative to share pictures on Flickr. He said I could created a community at Flickr, let everyone join that community and post their pictures. Then I let the Flickr tool pick up pictures from there. Pretty basic but cool. How could have I skipped it? This is definitely better than my earlier plan, for two basic reasons:
How to share your pictures to the group?
The FAQ at Flickr explains - The easiest way add a photo to a group is to go to the photo's page, and click on the "Send to Group" button that you should see between the photo title and the photo itself. Click that, then choose the group you want to send it to, and you're done!
So let's see how many of us are interested. I have already posted some pictures of the last PRSI event.

- If somebody plans to post some unpleasant pictures, we can remove him/her from the community.
- As the community grows, may so be the bonding between the PRkinds of India.

Let's use Flickr to share PR pictures on this blog

So many things written about how PR people can use Flickr. I tried most of it, but the best for me is simply surfing the site and get lost in its amazing collection of pictures posted by amateur and professional photographers across the globe.
Now I'm using a Flickr tool to get pictures tagged 'art' on this blog, which shows random pictures with that tag on this site (see. right hand section). Looks great to me. I wonder if my fellow PR people in India or elsewhere would like to contribute their pictures for this blog. How to do this? We can use this tool to post our PR event and other pictures related to PR, which we want to showcase to other PR fellows.
To start with, all that one needs to do is register on Flickr and start uploading pictures. Just remember that while you are tagging your pictures, make sure you include this term - Indiapr - as one of the tags. Thats it. I'll then direct the flickr tool to search for pictures tagged with Indiapr. Viola! All our pictures are shown here on this blog randomly everytime someone opens this site. Anyone interested?
PS: Those who are thinking of having some fun by uploading some funny pictures and linking them here, read Flickr's community guidelenes :-) and better adhere to them, unless you want them to kick you out.
